My name is Richard Demma and I’m a crime writer, book reviewer and theater director.
I’m currently living in the beautiful old world city of Prague in the Czech Republic, a city of great writers past and present from Kafka and Karl Capek to Vaclav Havel, Daniela Hodrova and Jachym Topol. I’m originally from San Francisco, California, but I’ve traveled the world for the past forty years and lived in seven different countries, including, Thailand for twenty five years, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Bosnia Herzegovina, and Croatia. I have a keen appreciation for the rich variety of different cultures in our world and their unique religious and spiritual dimensions.
I’m a passionate aficionado of all kinds of serious fiction, especially crime and mystery fiction that helps us explore the deeper mysteries of the human heart, it’s conflicts and moral struggles, its search for meaning and purpose, its yearning for a spiritual dimension to human existence. I read widely in all crime genres, from crimes in the home and village to crimes in the global world, especially crimes of state and crimes against humanity. I’m especially interested in works that explore how religion has contributed to the existence of evil in the world and how it may also contribute to its healing.
I received a BA in English Literature from The University of San Francisco, a Masters Degree in Creative Writing from San Francisco State University and a Masters in Divinity from the Graduate Theological Union, University of California, Berkeley.
I’m currently working on a crime novel set in Prague.
