After a careful perusal of Book Club Reading List, I discovered these two remarkable books which I would like to review next at Crimes Scene Reviews. But which one to read first? Decisions, decisions! Why don’t you help me decide by voting in the comments section!
Both are Amazon Editor’s Favorite Books of the Year for 2014.
The first is Dosha, the Flight of the Russian Gypsies, by Sonia Meyer. This is a harrowing tale of political intrigue, narrow escapes, KGB entrapment and the flight to the West for freedom on the part of Russian Romany ‘Gypsies’, facing persecution under Khrushchev’s Soviet Union. The story unfolds through the eyes of Dosha, star rider of the Soviet Dressage team, as she defects to the West.
The second, Double Spy, is the true life autobiography of double agent, Peter van Wermeskerken, who worked as a spy for both East Germany’s notorious Stasi and for the Netherlands from 1967 to 1970. This is a riveting story of espionage, counterespionage and oppression from deep within this dark world, but it has touches of warmth and humor as well. There is also a tender love story at its heart, since the author entered the spy world partly for the sake of his beloved Kathe, in the hopes of returning with her to Germany as his bride.
